Three Reasons To Start Your Estate Plan Today
Video Transcript
Hey, welcome in, everybody. My name is Bill King here at the Manely Firm, PC. I head up our estate planning and probate branch. I’m here today to talk to you about the three documents that are the foundation to an estate plan.
So the first document we’re going to talk about is the will. This document is the who, what, when, where, and how you leave your property. You can be as general or specific as you want. Whether it’s a house, your favorite car, a t shirt, an heirloom, a blanket. Whatever that is, you get to decide how that property is left within the will.
The second document we’re going to talk about today is an advance health care directive. This document allows you to choose a health care agent that’s going to make decisions for you regarding your medical care if something were to happen to you. If you become incapacitated and unable to make those decisions on your own, this person that you trust will be able to relay those decisions to your medical providers so that you’re taken care of in the way that you choose.
So the third document that we’re going to talk about today is a power of attorney. This allows you to select an agent who’s going to make decisions for you in regards to your finances and property, but you don’t have to be incapacitated to use this document. You can select somebody who’s going to be able to assist you if you need somebody to go to the bank for you, if you need somebody to sell some property for you, if you need somebody to pay some bills for you. This document allows somebody to step into your shoes and to do just that if you were unable to do so.
