Hubris

You would think that staring at four gray walls in an 8 x 12 for three months with several of the least friendly guys you are ever likely to meet would sober you up, would cause you to take a bit more humble stock of yourself. Not so for this guy.

The Supreme Court - Four Years Later

Four years ago today, I argued before the United States Supreme Court in Chafin v Chafin. When the Court issued its opinion, it agreed with me 9-0. Yes, it was a unanimous Supreme Court with a Concurring Opinion by Justices Ginsburg, Scalia and Breyer. It was, indeed, a kumbaya moment for our Supreme Court.

Tick Tock

Her child was missing. The child's father had suddenly shown up at her mother's with the police, demanding his son. They were still married. There were no orders which gave either one of them superior rights so they had equal rights to the boy. One thing was for sure, the father's rights were superior to the grandmother's. When pressed, the police couldn't do anything about that. They had to demand the boy from the grandmother. They had to turn the boy over to the father.

The Secret Stash

Last Tuesday, while Americans were casting their votes, India's government declared 86% of its currency illegal. 500 and 1,000 Rupee Notes, worth about $7.36 and $14.72 respectively, were outlawed overnight. The same piece of paper was worth 500 Rupees at 11:59 p.m. and worth zero Rupees at 12:01 a.m.. Indian's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi calls this demonetisation. Critics called it the economic equivalent of shock and awe.

Murder-Suicide

Murder-suicide is an act in which someone kills one or more other persons immediately before or at the same time as killing oneself. Unfortunately, murder-suicides are rampant now. They are all the rage.

Women Empowered

We have only one day left before the election. It looks very much like we will have our first woman president. Some voters are elated about that. Some voters are as angry as perhaps they have ever been in their lives.

Man Without a Booth

For well better than a decade, a distinguished older gentleman has been collecting our parking fares as we exit the garage in Atlanta. We hand him our ticket, he calculates the cost, you hand him your payment, and he raises the gate so that you can drive out. Along the way he exchanges pleasantries, a bit of weather and perhaps a bit of news.
