Michael Manely: Star Maker

At the beginning of the month, I had the distinct honor of being named to the Rising Stars list for the 2018 Georgia Super Lawyers magazine in the practice of family law. Less than 2.5% of eligible attorneys in Georgia are selected for this honor. To qualify as a "Rising Star", an attorney must either be under the age of 40 or have practiced law for less than 10 years.

Emotional Intelligence

Our firm is "Strategic and Intelligent" by design. People often think of strategic as where to position your forces to out-flank the opponent. There is certainly that element in our family law practice, but there are many, many layers and levels of strategy that are at play in most every family law case.

The Superlative Mr. Purvis

I just have to brag here for a moment. The 2018 Super Lawyers magazine just came out and our own David Purvis is recognized as a Super Lawyer in family law. Yes, that Mr. Purvis of Savannah fame. Yes, that Mr. Purvis who is the family law professor at the Savannah College of Law. Yes, that Mr. Purvis who is an Administrative Law Judge for Southeast Georgia. Yes, that Mr. Purvis who has been recognized as the most successful lawyer in Savannah at settling his clients' divorce and family law disputes. Yes, that Mr. Purvis who heads up The Manely Firm's operations for Savannah and all points near. Yes indeed, that Mr. Purvis.

Family Law and the Hollywood Drama

I love "A Christmas Carol" and "It's a Wonderful Life," both great progressive, humanitarian dramas about "finding your religion" at Christmastime. Both are meaningful and life affirming. While both of the protagonists in those stories reach their epiphanies and help their fellow man, they only get there after tremendous drama. Perhaps one needs drama to reach an epiphany.

Family Law: How's That Working For You?

A while back, I was consulting with a guy about an appeal who had been absolutely railroaded by the trial judge. The guy had filed a contempt against his ex for frustrating his visitation rights and had asked the judge to modify those rights to expand them a little more. At the end of his case, the judge denied the guy's contempt and restricted his visitation rights a bit further. It seemed that family law was being anything but just to this poor soul.

Family Law: The Truth Shall Set You Free

Your case begins before the filing, before a consult, before you even contemplate filing for divorce. A case begins when a relationship starts, when a child is born, when you take a job, or buy a house. A case is born in the actions you take (what we call the facts of the case). We, as your family law advocate, rely on those facts, and those facts come from you. We rely on the truth, or what you tell us is the truth. We rely on you.

Defending Against the Ridiculous in Family Law

I like reason and logic. I'm attracted to reason and logic. I abhor the unreasonable and the illogical. As a result, I typically attract reasonable and logical people who want to be my Family Law clients because, well, they like reason and logic, too. And often, the other party tends to be reasonable and logical because, well, people who are reasonable and logical tend to attract reasonable and logical people to marry. Sometimes, reason and logic continue to rule the day and families find their ways through the court system in such a way that results in healthy new family dynamics.

Family Law: Everyone Snaps

Everyone has a breaking point. You might be farther down the scale toward harder to break, but you are still on that scale. You can be broken. In family law, we are always concerned about where our clients and the opposing parties fall on that scale because we know that everyone snaps.

Family Law: College, the Expense is Too Dear.

When we think about raising kids, college expenses seem to be "the end of the road," one of the last hurdles to overcome in financially supporting the children. That is, of course, if you don't plan to pay for a big wedding. Family Law plays a role here, as well.
