Sinister Intentions

Sarah finishes up work…exhausted by the long day. The café had been filled with holiday shoppers and families visiting from out of town. She begins to look for her car keys in her purse. But when she reaches her car, she quickly realized that her car was already unlocked. She swears that she locked it before she walked into the café. But maybe she was wrong. She has been overly tired from long shifts and overtime due to the holiday hours. Sarah hears a faint sound behind her. She sees something move out of the corner of her eye. Was her tired mind playing tricks on her? She looks across the parking lot.

There he is….again. Standing there. Not moving towards her. Just staring. It was Jason. Her ex. It was not her imagination. It was not her mind playing tricks on her. Panic begins to settle in…..

Apple has been sued by two women who allege their previous romantic partners used the company’s AirTag devices to track their location. For those who are unfamiliar, an air tag is a small tracking device designed by Apple. They are slightly larger than a quarter and its intended use is to help locate lost items, such as luggage at an airport.

Stalkers have now thought of a more sinister use to these objects.

The class action lawsuit was filed in federal court in San Francisco on Monday, December 5, 2022, on behalf of one woman from Texas and another in New York.

One of the victims states that her ex-boyfriend placed an AirTag into the wheel well of a tire on her car.

The other woman stated that her ex-husband, who had been harassing her and challenging her about her location, placed an AirTag in her child’s backpack. Though she attempted to disable it, another one soon showed up in its place.

Georgia law defines stalking as:

“A person commits the offense of stalking when he or she follows, places under surveillance, or contacts another person at or about a place or places without the consent of the other person for the purpose of harassing and intimidating the other person.”
