Legal Services – Affordability Not Just a Dream Any More

On Behalf of | Jan 26, 2015 | Affordability

Four years ago, I had a dream.  I dreamed that Michael and our team at The Manely Firm, PC could expand access to justice for all through affordability. Then in law school, I dreamed that we could hire and train newly-minted attorneys seeking work to offer affordable legal services to the many who would otherwise go unrepresented and therefore, go without access to justice.

On August 28, 1963,  Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream.  He said, “Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hoped the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.” In an era where legislatures are moving to limit voting rights and unarmed black men are shot and choked to death in the streets, we are all being rudely awakened.

When one is denied justice, we are all denied justice.  When our judicial system is unfair to one, it is unfair to all.  If it could happen to them, it could happen to me.  It could happen to you.  In Martin Luther King’s words, “…their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.”

Every day we and our children pledge, “One nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”  That ideal is the foundation of the American dream.  But, for many of all racial and ethnic backgrounds who can’t afford an attorney, justice is still a distant dream.  But, with affordability, the American ideal of justice is within reach.

The Manely Firm, P.C.‘s Justice Cafe, provides affordable attorneys in Atlanta, Marietta, Lawrenceville and Savannah.  Our low-cost attorneys provide real justice, for real people with real budgets. The Cafe serves up unundled legal service for up to ten hours for $75 an hour.  That’s enough low-cost legal service to bond someone out of jail; negotiate a plea; appear at an arraignment; draft a civil complaint; get service on an opposing party perfected; file for child support; file for child support modification; secure a temporary protective order; secure health care wishes or appoint a guardian.  Whether it’s criminal misdemeanor, family law, juvenile delinquency, healthcare directives, end of life directives or probate law, call us. Better yet. Tell whoever needs to know, you’re gonna’ call us.  You want to speak to your attorney.
