Alisha Jean Esselstein
- Associate Attorney
Alisha Esselstein grew up in Wisconsin and has had a passion for human rights since a young age. She grew up in a tiny farming town where the cows actually outnumbered the people. She learned about strength and determination from her mother, the police chief of her home town. While her family didn't discuss politics or activism with regularity, her need to help others was evident even as a sixth grader when she supported LGBTQ rights in an essay contest. This continued through high school as she led other students to speak up for what they believed in...yes, she proudly led a student high school walkout to protest legislation she strongly opposed!
Alisha earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota graduating Manga Cum Laude. She lived and studied international law and relations in Nairobi, Kenya and Cuernavaca, Mexico. She continued with her goal of helping others as she entered the University of Wisconsin Law School earning her Juris Doctor and Certificate in International Law. After her first year in law school, Alisha traveled to Sri Lanka to work for the summer with the Law and Society Trust in Sri Lanka. Her focus was on women's rights as she worked through research and reports to remove discriminatory aspects from the country's constitution and implement equal opportunities.
Alisha then worked at the International Center for Transitional Justice during her 2L summer in Manhattan, NY. She worked in the Gender Justice Department where she helped created gender sensitive prosecution trainings for UN Women. During her 3L year, her adorable son Liam was born. She finished law school at the University of London SOAS studying human rights law. Liam received his first passport and they put it to good use in the UK, Ireland, and Italy!
Along with studies, family, and travel, Alisha proudly received the Richard Bilder International Law Scholar award, the Gracie Public Service Fellowship award, the Women, Well-Being, Wisconsin and the World (4W) Scholar, Association for Women Lawyers Scholar award, among many others through the University of Wisconsin Law School. She also actively coordinated seminars on "Women Working for Women in the Public Interest" and "International Advocacy Against Gender Based Violence."
In her spare time, Alisha enjoys going to the beach, reading a good book, working out on her Peloton, and exploring with her family and her husband Tyler! In addition to Liam, she is now a mom of four to Cash, Hattie, and soon-to-be Lennon!
