With Mothers it often seems the model is damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Once upon a time, as the myth goes, Mothers stayed home to raise the kids. If Mothers and Fathers divorced, Fathers paid alimony to Mothers, often for life. Now, even when Mother and Father have an agreement that Mother will stay home to raise the kids, it is difficult for Mother to obtain a decent alimony award. Juries often hold the point of view that adults ought to work outside the home. If juries won't award alimony, or much of it, Judges won't either. It isn't fair, but it is the reality.
The flip side of this coin is working Mothers. A very successful Mother can run the risk of losing a custody battle with a Father who isn't so successful, whether by choice or circumstance. Hours spent away from home developing and nurturing a career can be interpreted as a lack of interest in developing and nurturing the children. Again, it isn't fair, but it can be the reality.
Women have always had a nearly impossible role in societies, however they are structured. Our current structure eases societal norms a bit, but only a bit. Threading the needle of societal expectations (which are the basis for legal standards) is, and always has been difficult.
We can help you thread that needle. If you'd like help, please call us at 678-269-6541.
