International Family Law: Our World, Your World, Is Changing

Posted By International Family Law: Our World, Your World, Is Changing || 15-Jul-2016

We live in a strange and fast paced world where events’ correlations are unpredictable.  Relations between countries could change overnight. For example, Great Britain’s recent decision to leave the European Union will be the beginning of major geopolitical changes – just like it happened with the Soviet Union. I lived through changes of that magnitude during the dissolution of the USSR and can testify firsthand that the consequences of Great Britain leaving the European Union will echo for many years to come and will affect every major county in the world.

I have recently read the World Affairs Council of Atlanta’s program announcement which compared Brexit to a messy divorce.  As a divorce lawyer in Atlanta, I definitely see the similarities. Just like in a regular divorce, Brexit will affect not just the divorcing parties.  The impact will be deep and unpredictable, and the allies of Great Britain and the European Union would be forced to pick sides.

The outside world influences all of us whether we want it to or not. Recent terrorist attacks in Paris, Bangladesh, Turkey and now Nice are overshadowed by tragic events in Baton Rouge, St. Paul and Dallas resulting in protests all over the United States including massive protests here in Atlanta. We all are in the middle of it; we all are impacted.

Usually, close relations with friends and family is a safe harbor from the maddening world.  We all need support, love, companionship, and a helping hand in the time of crisis.  Still, every one of us inadvertently brings our parents, friends, jobs, political and religious views, etc. into the relations.  Every single divorce and custody battle is a reflection of the changing world.   All cultural, religion, and racial differences are brought to the table in a family setting.

P.S.I want to dedicate my blog post today to two Emory students. As an Emory alumna, it is with a heavy heart that I am joining the Atlanta and Emory community to mourn the death of Abinta Kabir and Faraaz Hossein, the two Emory students that were held hostage and killed during the terrorist attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh on July 1, 2016.  Per  information from different sources revealed during the investigation in Dhaka, Faraaz Hossein had an option to leave the café that was targeted by terrorists, but he refused to leave behind the friend that he came with and was killed by the terrorists.

We all live in a strange and unpredictable world.
