Luis A. Vélez
Luis is a summa cum laude graduate of Georgia State University College
of Law (GSU COL), where he ranked 5th overall in his class (top 3%). He
earned seven CALI Awards, which are given to law school students who receive
the highest grade in courses. While at GSU COL, Luis was an extern for
the Honorable Hugh P. Thompson, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
of Georgia. Due to his outstanding legal research skills, Luis was allowed
to draft an opinion on a family law case for the Court. He previously
received an A.B. degree in Political Science from Princeton University.
Prior to pursuing law as a second career, Luis worked for over 20 years
in the non-profit, government, and foundation sectors. He focused on serving
low-income and court-involved children, youth, and families. Luis managed
organizations in New York and Boston that provided a broad range of counseling,
court diversion, and other services to thousands of individuals. He was
the first Hispanic Vice Chairperson of the Boston School Board.
Luis has been happily married for over 23 years and has two wonderful children.
